Loft is not a measure of skill
The single most common thing we correct on this bench is a driver with too little loft. It is rarely a technical mistake; it is a cultural one. Lower lofts are marketed to better players, so golfers read the number on the crown as a statement about themselves rather than as a variable to be matched to their delivery.
What actually determines the right figure is the combination of clubhead speed, angle of attack and where on the face you tend to make contact. A golfer swinging at 88 miles an hour with a slightly descending strike needs meaningfully more loft to hold the ball in the air than the number stamped on most stock builds provides. We have added two and even three degrees to golfers who arrived convinced they needed less.
The second most common correction is length. Stock drivers have grown past 45.5 inches, which is longer than most golfers can strike centrally. An inch off frequently costs nothing in speed and returns far more in strike quality than the speed loss takes away.

Why we do not chase the lowest spin number available
Spin reduction has been the headline claim in driver marketing for a decade, and in a still indoor bay a low-spin build does produce impressive carry figures. On a Tuesday evening at a lakefront course with the wind quartering off the water, the same build behaves differently.
A ball with too little spin loses lift early and drops out of the air; in a crosswind it also becomes harder to hold a line, because there is less gyroscopic stability keeping the flight honest. Golfers who arrive complaining that their new driver “falls out of the sky” are usually describing exactly this.
So the spin window on our sheets is a range with a floor, not a target of zero. For most club golfers that floor sits around 2,000 rpm and for slower speeds meaningfully higher. It is one of the few places where the number that wins in the bay is not the number that wins on the course.
Cold-weather column, in plain terms: ball speed falls slightly as the air cools, and colder air is denser, so carry drops on both counts. Between a 75°F afternoon and a 45°F morning most golfers lose somewhere between six and twelve yards of driver carry. Only after the fitted geometry is settled. Head model matters less than the three lines above it, and testing it first hides them.
