Slower swings need more loft, not less

The driver that suited you at fifty-five is quietly costing you carry at sixty-eight, and the number on the crown is the reason.

A version of this conversation happens on our floor most weeks. A golfer in his late sixties arrives convinced he needs a new driver, because the one he has stopped going as far as it used to. He is right that something changed. He is almost always wrong about what.

Clubhead speed does decline with age, and there is no honest way to sell somebody around that. But speed loss alone rarely accounts for the carry a golfer notices losing. What accounts for it is that a driver built for one speed produces a completely different flight at a lower one, and nobody adjusted the specification when the speed moved.

What actually happens to the ball

Carry distance depends on three things: ball speed, launch angle and spin rate. Speed provides the raw energy. Launch angle and spin decide how long the ball stays in the air using it.

When clubhead speed falls, ball speed falls with it. So does spin, because spin is largely generated by speed. And launch angle tends to fall too, because a slower swing usually arrives with a shallower or slightly downward attack angle rather than the upward strike that a fast, aggressive swing produces.

All three move in the same direction at once, and the result is a ball that leaves lower, spins less, and drops out of the air early. It is not a gentle decline; it is a flight that has stopped working. The golfer experiences it as “my driver goes nowhere now.”

The point that surprises people: at slower speeds, spin is your friend. A low-spin driver setup is designed to stop a fast swing from ballooning the ball. Apply it to a swing that is not producing much spin in the first place and you have removed the lift keeping the ball in the air.

How much loft, in practice

The stock market is built around 9° to 10.5° drivers, and those are appropriate for golfers swinging comfortably above 100 miles an hour. Below that, the numbers we end up writing look quite different from what most golfers expect to see on their own club.

A golfer at 85 miles an hour usually needs something in the 12° to 13° range. At 78 miles an hour, 13° to 15° is common. We have written specifications above 15° for golfers in their eighties and watched them gain twenty yards of carry over the 10.5° club they had been loyally playing for a decade.

Those are ranges for testing, not prescriptions. Attack angle moves them significantly — a golfer who strikes up on the ball needs less loft than one who strikes down at the same speed. That is the whole reason the number gets tested on a monitor rather than looked up.

The three-inch problem sitting next to it

Loft is not the only thing that stopped fitting. Two other lines on the sheet usually need revisiting at the same time, and ignoring them undoes the loft change.

Shaft weight. A 65-gram driver shaft that felt stable at sixty can feel like an anchor at seventy. Dropping to 50 grams, sometimes 45, frequently returns two or three miles an hour of clubhead speed at no cost in control — because the golfer can actually sequence the club again.

Length. Stock drivers now run past 45.5 inches. If strike location has drifted toward the heel or the low face, shortening to 44.5 inches will recover more ball speed through better contact than the lost length takes away. Centre strike beats length at every swing speed, and it beats it most decisively at slower ones.

Why golfers resist this

Honestly? Because high loft is marketed as a beginner's club and low loft is marketed as an expert's. That association is entirely commercial and has no basis in physics, but it is powerful. We regularly hand a golfer a 13° head, watch him gain fifteen yards, and then watch him hesitate because of what the number says about him.

Nobody in your foursome can read the loft on your driver. They can all see where the ball lands.

The other resistance is the assumption that a fix means a purchase. Often it does not. Most drivers made in the last decade have an adjustable sleeve with a range of a degree or two, which is free. And if a new head is genuinely needed, the shaft frequently is not — a $25 build fee and a head is a very different bill from a new driver.

What testing this costs

A single club write-up on the driver is $95 and runs an hour. We gauge what you brought, capture a baseline, then work through length, loft and shaft weight one variable at a time and record the carry each change produced. The fee comes back in full against a build placed within sixty days.

You will leave with a sheet that says, in numbers, what your current driver does and what the tested alternative did. Whether you act on it is entirely up to you.
