Reading the shaft block on your sheet

Six lines appear under “shaft record” on every specification we write. This page explains what each of them is, in the order they matter.

Line one

Weight, in grams

The first number we settle and the one most golfers have never been told. A raw shaft weight of 50 grams and one of 120 grams are not variations on a theme; they are different clubs. Weight sets how much effort a swing costs, how quickly the club can be sequenced, and where the strike tends to land on the face.

The instinct to go lighter for more speed is only half right. Lighter shafts do raise clubhead speed for many golfers, and they also reduce the feedback a swing relies on to time itself. A golfer who loses the sense of where the head is will start throwing it early, and the extra speed arrives too soon to be useful. We test weight classes in both directions before choosing.


Line two

Flex letter, and why we distrust it

There is no industry standard behind R, S or X. One maker's stiff measures softer than another maker's regular, and the letter tells you nothing about where along the shaft that stiffness sits. It is a marketing convenience that survives because it is easy to print on a band.

We record the letter because you will see it on the component, but the number underneath it is the one we build to.


Line three

Frequency in CPM

Cycles per minute, measured on an analyser with the butt clamped and a fixed weight at the tip. It is a real, repeatable number, and unlike a flex letter it can be compared across brands. It is also the only practical way to check that eight irons in a set are actually stiffness-matched to one another rather than merely wearing the same label.

These bands are a starting point for testing and nothing more. A golfer's measured tempo can move them a full band in either direction, which is exactly why the analyser sits next to the bay rather than in a back room.


Line four

Bend profile

Two shafts can match on weight and on frequency and still behave differently, because stiffness is not evenly distributed along the tube. A shaft that is softer near the tip will present more loft at impact and launch the ball higher; one that is stiffer through the tip will hold the face down and produce a flatter, lower-spinning flight.

You will hear this called kick point, bend point or launch profile. The vocabulary varies by manufacturer. What goes on your sheet is the model name and the launch behaviour we measured, not the marketing adjective on the box.


Line five

Torque

Resistance to twisting about the shaft's own axis, quoted in degrees, typically between about 2.5 and 6. Low torque resists the head twisting on off-centre strikes and tends to feel firm and board-like. Higher torque feels livelier and softer.

The common advice — better players want less torque — is too blunt to be useful. A smooth-tempo golfer put into a very low torque shaft frequently loses feel and starts steering the club. Torque is a matching decision, and on our sheets it is recorded alongside weight and frequency rather than treated as a quality score.


Line six

Raw length and trim

The line most golfers have never seen and the one that most often explains a mystery. A shaft arrives at a raw length — commonly 46 inches for a wood, 41 for an iron — and reaches playing length by having material removed from the butt, the tip, or both. Tip trimming stiffens the section that controls launch. Butt trimming stiffens overall feel with far less effect on flight.

Trim two identical shafts differently and you have built two different clubs. Because that information is almost never recorded anywhere, an unlabelled replacement built by a different shop years later routinely fails to match. Ours is written down in inches, per club.

If you own clubs built elsewhere, bring them in for an intake gauge pass. We can measure installed frequency, weight, swingweight and playing length and reconstruct most of the shaft block even when no original paperwork exists. It costs $35 and takes about twenty minutes.

Order of importance

If you only fix one line, fix weight

In the sessions we run, shaft weight moves ball flight and consistency more than flex, profile or torque do — and it is also the line most often wrong on a set bought off a rack. Golfers over sixty and golfers coming out of a women's boxed set are the two groups where a weight change alone produces the largest single improvement.
