I run the gapping ladders on this floor, and there is one defect I find more reliably than any other. It is not in the driver and it is not in the long irons. It sits between the pitching wedge and the sand wedge, and it affects nearly every boxed set I measure — women's sets most severely, because those sets are more likely to be sold complete and less likely to be revisited.
How the hole got there
Iron lofts have been strengthened steadily for two decades, because a stronger 7-iron flies further and distance sells clubs. The pitching wedge followed the set down: a club that was 48° not long ago now routinely arrives at 43° or 44°.
Sand wedges did not move, because bunker play needs the loft it needs. So the two clubs drifted apart. In a set where every other step is four degrees, the pitching wedge and sand wedge are now often eleven or twelve degrees apart.
In a boxed set the problem is worse still, because these sets frequently stop at the sand wedge with no gap wedge offered at all. The set is described as complete. It is not.
What that looks like in yards
Here is a real ladder from a set measured on this floor. The golfer had never had her distances recorded and believed her wedges covered everything inside 110 yards.

Eleven, eleven, then twenty-five. Everything between 62 and 85 yards had to be manufactured with a partial swing, and partial swings are the least repeatable shots in golf even for good players. In the scoring zone, where the difference between a birdie putt and a bogey is measured in feet, that is an expensive place to be improvising.
One club closed it. A 50° wedge built to match her set on length, lie and shaft carried 74 yards. The ladder became 11, 11, 12, 13. Total cost including the build fee was less than a third of what she had been quoted for a new set of irons to “fix her distances.”
How to find your own gap
You do not need us for the first part. Take your pitching wedge and sand wedge to a range with marked distances, hit ten full shots with each, and ignore the best one and the worst one. The average of the remaining eight is your real carry. If the difference between the two clubs is more than about fourteen yards, you have a hole.
What you probably do need help with is the second part: knowing what loft closes the gap without opening a new one below it, and building that club so it matches the set it is joining. A gap wedge bought off a rack with a stock shaft and a stock length is a different club from the eight above it, and it will not slot into the ladder cleanly.
Matching matters as much as loft
A wedge added to a set should share the set's shaft weight, follow its length progression, and continue its lie angle progression. It should also carry a swingweight consistent with the clubs above it, which for wedges usually means slightly heavier rather than the same.
None of that is expensive. It is a component and a $25 build fee. What it requires is knowing the numbers of the set you already own, which is exactly what the sheet exists for — and if you have no sheet, an intake gauge pass at $35 produces one.
This is the cheapest stroke in golf, and it is sitting in the part of the bag nobody photographs.
Bounce, briefly
While you are adding the club, get the bounce right for where you play. Northeast Ohio holds moisture into May and our sand tends to be soft, both of which reward more bounce than a golfer typically expects. A low-bounce wedge chosen because it looked sharp will dig in April turf and turn a routine pitch into a chunk. We choose the grind against the courses you named at the counter and write the reason on the sheet.
