I pull junior clubs apart at this bench most weeks, and the pattern is monotonous. Two 7-irons arrive, both labelled “junior flex,” both aimed at roughly the same age of child. One has a 55-gram graphite shaft. The other has a cut-down 105-gram steel shaft that started life in an adult set. The label on the band is identical and the two clubs have essentially nothing in common.
Flex on a junior club is close to meaningless. There is no standard behind it even in the adult market, and in the junior market there is not even a convention. What matters, overwhelmingly, is how much the whole club weighs, and shaft weight is the largest lever a builder has over that.
What too much weight does to a child
A swing is a sequence: the body starts the club moving, then the arms, then the hands release the head through the ball. That sequence requires the child to be able to control the club through the change of direction. If the club is too heavy for them, they cannot.
What happens instead is a heave. The child starts the downswing with everything at once, throws the club from the top, and the head arrives early and open. They also stop finishing the swing, because there is no energy left to decelerate the club after impact. It looks like a technique problem, so it gets treated as one, and no amount of instruction fixes it while the club stays too heavy.
The clearest tell: a child whose backswing stops short and whose follow-through collapses is usually being told to “finish the swing.” Put a club forty grams lighter in their hands and watch the finish appear without a word of instruction.
Rough targets we build to
These are 7-iron shaft weights, and they are starting points for measurement rather than rules. Children of the same age vary enormously in strength, and a strong twelve-year-old may want more than a slight fifteen-year-old.

Note where the top of that table sits relative to a standard adult iron shaft, which commonly runs 105 to 120 grams. A cut-down adult club does not merely feel heavy to a child. It is often double the weight the specification calls for.
Cutting down makes it worse, not better
The instinct to shorten an adult club for a child is understandable and it is exactly backwards mechanically. Removing length from the butt of a shaft removes very little weight while making the shaft substantially stiffer — you have taken away the soft, easy-to-load section and left the stiff part. The child ends up with a club that is still too heavy and now too stiff as well.
The head weight also does not change. A standard adult iron head is around 270 grams, which was chosen to balance against a 37-inch shaft. Put it on a 31-inch shaft and the swingweight collapses — the club feels dead in the hands, which is one more reason the child cannot sense where the head is.
Extending is different
Going the other way is a genuinely useful trick and it is the reason we ask families to come back rather than replace. Adding an inch or two of butt extension to a properly specified junior club keeps the weight and flex the child is used to and buys another season of growth. We re-weight the head to hold swingweight in its window, and the whole operation is $18 a club.
Ask what the shaft weighs. If the shop cannot tell you, they do not know what they sold you.
What to ask before buying anything
- What does the shaft weigh, in grams? Not the flex — the weight.
- What does the assembled club weigh? Under 300 grams total is a reasonable target for a small child's 7-iron.
- Is the grip sized for the hand that will hold it, or is it an adult grip on a short shaft?
- Can the shaft be extended later, and by how much?
